Work has begun to make permanent, center-street parking on Salt Lake City's Broadway.
Construction on 300 South between 400 West and Main is expected to last until mid-September as crews replace the painted mid-street parking and pedestrian area with concrete raised walkways and medians.
The project will also add landscaping, pedestrian-level lighting at mid-block crosswalks and electrical outlets to allow for tree lighting.
Mayor Rocky Anderson has pushed for the project to make the area a more distinct, walkable district.
The city expects the road to remain open with one lane of traffic in each direction except on a few Sundays, when sections of the road will be closed for resurfacing.
The mid-street parking will be closed during construction, and some of the angled parking along the sidewalks may be converted to parallel parking temporarily. Sidewalks will not be affected.
