The winners and the losers

Loser: The city of Mapleton ran headlong into the challenges that confront residential growth and agriculture — and it couldn't have botched things more if it tried. A man who bought land zoned for agricultural uses began operating a dairy farm last year but was forced to shut down because unrelenting neighbors complained about the smell. The city granted him a permit to operate, then revoked it after the complaints came in.

Luckily for the city, the farmer, Paul Opfar, accepted a $202,000 settlement offer from the city this week and decided not to sue. Now all those angry neighbors can go on drinking milk every day without having to think about the livelihood of anyone who produces it.

Winner: Jace Muir's life was saved by a helmet. That ought to be a strong message to the parents of all children, and to adults, as well. Muir, 5 years old, had a car run over his head last week while riding a skateboard on his stomach in his South Jordan neighborhood. The helmet broke, but his head did not. He lost three teeth, broke his jaw and was bleeding badly, but he will be OK. Our guess is his parents will never have trouble talking him into wearing headgear any time in the future. Our hope is that all parents will experience the same level of cooperation.
