KAYSVILLE It was another banner day for Davis High track and field. The boys and girls teams swept the Region 1 championships, beating out Viewmont and Fremont to make a strong statement heading into this weekend's 5A state meet at BYU.
The Davis girls captured yet another region title with a strong all-around performance, including first-place finishes by Candace Eddy (1,600 meters), Natalie Haws (3,200 meters), Alison Dunford (shotput) and Jordan Harris (javelin), and relay victories in the 4x400 and medley races. The Darts ended with 135 points to outdistance second-place finishers Viewmont and Fremont, who had 113 apiece.
Viewmont's Stephanie Muelleck was one of the standout athletes of the day. Not surprisingly, she swept the hurdles events, winning the 100- and 300-meter races. She then stunned the field and herself by adding a third individual top prize to her trophy case by winning the 200-meter race. That event ended in a 1-2-3 finish for Viewmont as Nancy Ovuoba and Bailee Whitworth placed second and third, respectively. Whitworth (long jump) and Ovuoba (100 meters) also claimed championships.
The Davis boys cruised to the Region 1 title, regaining it after having lost last year to rival Viewmont, which finished second. The Darts finished with 167 points to the Vikings' 115, while Fremont came in a close third at 111.
Bryce Hall turned in the top performance of the meet for the boys in the shotput event. He heaved a throw of 62 feet, 4 inches to break a two-decade-old region record. Matt White was a multiple winner for Fremont, capturing first-place prizes in the 200- and 400-meter dashes.
