Sidewalk artists do chalk magic today

Bountiful is buzzing with activity today as artists, families and school groups gather on Main Street to display their talents and do their chalk magic on the sidewalks.

The featured artist this year is Lester B. Lee, professional artist and art educator at Woods Cross High School. He participated in the festival last year, and his piece was a favorite among festivalgoers.

"This is temporary art, which makes it fun and unique," said Lee. "It is amazing what artists come up with and how much dimension you can get with the chalk on the sidewalk. Last year was a phenomenal success. This year promises to be even bigger with over 60 artists participating."

"This event is fun for the whole community as well as a good cause in helping children who are in need," said Emma Dugal, executive director of the Bountiful/Davis Art Center.

The art squares will be judged in several categories, and awards will be given today starting at 6 p.m. near the corner of Main and 200 South. The public has the opportunity to vote for a favorite square for the "People's Choice Award." The public is invited to watch the artists as they create their finished pieces. The art will be on display through the weekend or until the rain or sprinklers wash it away.

This event is organized by the Joy Foundation to benefit the Christmas Box House, a children's shelter.
