Although some evangelical Christians support Romney's candidacy, evangelist Bill Keller has sent an e-mail to 2.4 million subscribers saying, "If you vote for Mitt Romney, you are voting for Satan." Keller hosts a Florida-based TV prayer program and LivePrayer.com.
The Associated Press and Bloomberg News said Friday that Romney, in a report to be submitted to the Federal Election Commission, is expected to announce financial assets between $190 million and $250 million. His assets are being held in a blind trust that he and his wife set up when he took office as governor of Massachusetts in 2002.
Despite his wealth, Romney has expressed his desire to involve Americans of all means in his campaign.
Tuesday's 24-hour push is intended to attract supporters who may have as little as $5 to give or just a few hours to volunteer, unlike the campaign's first major fund-raising event, a call center set up in Boston that attracted heavy-hitters from around the country, including Utah.
This time around, the campaign is focusing on the number of people joining rather than the amount of money raised. If the 24-hour sign-up is successful, the campaign will nearly double the number of supporters who gave money in the first three months of the year.
"We're not putting any emphasis on the size of contribution," said Spencer Zwick, Romney's national finance director. "We're looking for supporters from all walks of life to make a contribution. ... We're trying to tear down the barrier to support Mitt Romney."
That's important even in Utah, Zwick said, where Romney is by far the leading presidential candidate because of his success as the leader of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake and his membership in the LDS Church.
"Not every person who wants to support Mitt Romney can fly across the country and make phone calls," Zwick said. "We have a lot of supporters in Utah. We have to give them the tools and show them they have a seat at the table."
Information on participating in the debate parties and registering to raise money at the call centers is available on the campaign Web site, www.mittromney.com, or by calling 866-WIN-MITT (946-6488).
