The headstones of veterans buried in the Salt Lake City Cemetery will be repaired.
Onyx Construction has donated the equipment, materials and labor to fix about 1,500 headstones in the cemetery. Salt Lake City will then replace the sod around the headstones.
The headstones have languished for years in various states of disrepair, and many of them have sunk, been damaged by burrowing animals, or simply suffered from a lack of maintenance. Terry Schow, the director of the Division of Veterans Affairs for Utah, has told the Deseret Morning News that he would like the headstones to meet the same standards as those in Arlington National Cemetery.
After the announcement Wednesday that the headstones would be repaired, Schow said in a news release that "it's a fitting tribute for those who have served our country."
