Dear Heloise: I had your recipe for prewash spray and loved it, but I don't have it anymore. Could you please repeat it for me? —Marian, via e-mail

Marian, this is an old hint from 30-plus years ago that is still good today! It's easy and cheap to make, and it'll save you lots of money!

You will need to combine equal amounts (meaning 1/3, 1/3 and 1/3) of:

• Nonsudsy household ammonia

• Dishwashing liquid (that you hand-wash with), NOT dishwasher detergent, liquid or gel

• Water

Put these into a clean spray bottle and shake to mix. Be sure to clearly label the bottle with its contents and put in large letters "Do not use with household bleach" or any other product containing bleach. Caution: Remember, ammonia and chlorine bleach should NEVER be combined; they will cause a toxic and harmful gas if they are.

To use this prewash, just spray on the stained area of clothing and wash Immediately — do not let set for more than five minutes. — Heloise

Dear Heloise:When hanging an arrangement of crosses recently, I found that a couple of the metal ones hung lopsided. I fixed the problem by sticking a straight pin in the Sheetrock on the leaning side (under the cross "arm") to keep it in line. It's a quick fix, and the tiny pinhead isn't noticeable.

Also, I like to use wax-paper cereal-box liners and trace circles on them using 8- to 9-inch baking pans. I cut these out as needed to line the pans before baking cakes. I still grease and lightly dust each pan with flour first, but the added wax-paper liner guarantees easy cake removal every time! — Donna Lehr, New Braunfels, Texas

Dear Heloise: I read your column about a woman who lost her digital camera and, after she got it back, took a photo of her business card in case it was lost again.

My daughter lost her new digital camera while in Orlando, Fla. She was with the high-school band, and I felt it wouldn't be wise to put her name or address on the camera. For anyone who is with a group, photograph a large sign with the leader's name and phone number or the name of a church or business. They could be contacted instead of the person who owned the camera. This is much safer, especially when dealing with teens or younger people.

Send a money-saving or timesaving hint to Heloise, P.O. Box 795000, San Antonio, TX 78279-5000, or you can fax it to 210-435-6473 or e-mail it to Heloise@Heloise.com. I can't answer your letter personally but will use the best hints received in my column. © King Features Syndicate Inc.
