Future of Grandview school still uncertain

About 105 students in Provo are enrolled in the Freedom Academy charter school, in the same neighborhood as Grandview and Westridge elementary schools. The Walden charter high school may open an elementary school, which could take more students from district schools, according to the study.

But residents determined to keep Grandview open asked the district to consider closing schools on the east side.

Julie Durrant, who had opposed the bond issuance last year because she thought it would result in the closing of Grandview, urged the district to close Edgemont Elementary on the east side because the impacts would be fewer, she said.

"One thing is I believe this (study) was put together, was done on the hypothesis that 14 schools was too many for our district," Grandview Principal Drew Daniels said. "Probably that's understandable if you're doing it on finances, but there's a lot of data that shows (smaller schools) are good for kids."

Christian Faulconer asked the Board of Education to organize a committee of parents, teachers and school district officials to further examine the issue.

The study will be posted on the district's Web site, www.provo.edu.

Grandview was built in 1949, making it one of the oldest buildings in the district.
