Utah is among 30 states that are charter members of the Climate Registry, a group that is designed to address climate change.

Gov. Jon M. Huntsman Jr. appointed Dianne Nielsen, executive director of the Utah Department of Environmental Quality, to represent the state on the registry, according to a state press release.

"Utah is proud to be among the founding members of the Climate Registry. This is a positive step in building collaborative and responsive options for addressing the issue of climate change," he said Tuesday.

Huntsman added that the registry is both earth-friendly and business-friendly. The group will help measure, track and verify how much greenhouse gas is emitted into the atmosphere.

According to the DEQ, the registry will start accepting data about climate-changing emissions next January.
