More than 14,000 Utahns are expected to participate Saturday in the 11th Salt Lake City Susan G. Komen race for the cure 5K to show support in finding a cure for breast cancer.
Some 1,800 people participated in the first Salt Lake race in 1997. In nine years that number has grown more than 13,400 took part in last year's race.
All proceeds from the event go toward fighting the cancer 75 percent used for local education, cancer screenings and helping those who cannot afford treatments. The remaining 25 percent is used to fund Susan G. Komen for the Cure's national research grants.
The race begins at 8:30 a.m. at South Temple and 400 West racers are encouraged to run in support of a family member or loved one who has been affected by breast cancer. To register or for more information, visit www.komenslc.org.
