A 33-year-old man was taken to LDS Hospital following a tricky search-and-rescue operation in Davis County Sunday night.

The man and a friend were riding ATVs in Holbrook Canyon, about seven miles above the Bountiful "B." The man was going uphill when he hit a rock that tossed him backward off the ATV with the vehicle landing on top of him, said Davis County sheriff's deputy Todd Richardson.

The man's friend rode up to a place where he could get cell phone reception and called 911.

The difficulty for search-and-rescue crews was getting to the victim. The roads leading to him were extremely muddy and nearly impassable, Richardson said. It took 35 minutes from the time dispatchers received the call until the first paramedic arrived.

A Life Flight helicopter was able to find a clearing near the man, however, and land nearby. The man was loaded into the helicopter and taken to the hospital in serious but stable condition with neck and back injuries.
