The Humane Society of Utah is offering all of its cats that are age 5 months and older for only a $25 adoption fee through the month of May.

Late spring and early summer are some of the busiest times for animal shelters, which means that millions of loving cats and kittens are looking for good homes.

Stop by the Humane Society's facility, located at 4242 S. 300 West, during May, and you'll really save a bundle — not only a bundle of money but the life of a bundle of furry love.

"Right now we have an overabundance of cats and kittens in search of someone to call their own," says HSU Executive Director Gene Baierschmidt. "If you're curious about why cats are America's number one pet and you're ready to provide a caring home for one of your own, drop by the HSU shelter all through May." Adoptions are open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.

• The Humane Society offers these helpful reminders for new adopters:

— Cats need identification! Both tags and microchips are available at the Humane Society for low prices.

— Prepare your home for the new arrival. Cats are by nature inquisitive and agile, so cat-proof the house by keeping cabinets closed, small spaces covered, and getting rid of plants that can be toxic to felines. Set up a litter box in a quiet, out-of-the way area, and always keep it there.

— Care for your new cat. A free complete health examination by one of many participating private veterinarians is included with an adoption from the Humane Society. Take advantage of it. Clean the litter box at least twice a day. Make sure that fresh water is always accessible. Put a scratching post where the cat can easily reach it, and show him how to use it. And don't forget to play a variety of games with your newly adopted friend.

— With good care, cats can live for 20 years or more. They'll offer you unconditional love and happiness every step of the way. Adopt a cat from the Humane Society of Utah and see what a wonderful difference it can make in your life.
