The following films will be shown by the Salt Lake City Film Center. All screenings are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted.

On Wednesday, May 16, at 7 p.m. in the Rose Wagner Center, 138 W. 300 South, "Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars" will be shown. Suggested donation is $5.

Special guests: Ishmael Beah, former child soldier and best-selling author of "A Long Way Home: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier"; Laura Simms, internationally acclaimed storyteller and author; and Zach Niles, director of the film.

Award-winning Refugee All Stars are a band of six Sierra Leonean musicians who have been living as refugees in the West African nation of the Republic of Guinea, since a brutal civil war forced them from their homes. They have found refuge, purpose and a source of power by giving a voice to the experiences of so many struggling to survive.

Additional related events:

On Tuesday, May 15, in the Salt Lake City Library Auditorium at 4 p.m. "Operation Fine Girl" is a documentary about the use of sexual violence against women as a weapon in the Sierra Leone civil war.

On Wednesday, May 16, at 3 p.m. in the City Library Auditorium "Witness in Truth," the first video accompaniment to the official Sierra Leonean Truth and Reconciliation Commission report's findings on the key causes and consequences of the civil war in Sierra Leone. It is presented with the Center for Documentary Arts and The Leonardo.

On Wednesday, May 16, at 7 p.m., KUED's Diverse Voices presents "Aftermath of Meth," in the Salt Lake City Library Auditorium, 210 E 400 South.

"Aftermath of Meth" is a hard-hitting probe of the drug in the American West. The production focuses specifically on four stories — how a Mexican drug cartel introduced methamphetamine to Wyoming's Wind River Indian Reservation; how the meth epidemic is fueled by the oil and gas boom in the Uinta Basin, western Colorado and Wyoming; the environmental contamination from cooking methamphetamine in clandestine labs and open spaces; and children endangered by living in toxic environments where adults are using or manufacturing meth.

A discussion will follow the screening

On Saturday, May 19, at 11 a.m. in the Salt Lake City Library Auditorium, the 2004 documentary "Spirit Riders" will be shown.
