Family members of a New Jersey man have filed a federal suit against a Utah-based outdoor survival school, claiming the school's negligence led to the 29-year-old's death.
Relatives of Dave Buschow filed the suit Friday in U.S. District court in Utah. The suit claims the Boulder Outdoor Survival School Inc. and its instructors failed to accurately treat Buschow and supply him with water when he began to show signs of dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
The suit states Buschow enrolled in a BOSS 28-day course in July of 2006 in Boulder, along with about 11 other students. During the course several students began vomiting and complaining of dizziness after spending about two days hiking in 100 plus-degree heat without being provided water from instructors. Buschow himself complained of several symptoms.
The suit claims Buschow collapsed several hundred yards from a camping spot. At this point he asked an instructor for water, but the instructor refused. It was then that Buschow reportedly stopped breathing and later died.
Family members are asking for economic, general and punitive damages to be proven at trial.
