SALEM The Nebo School District received $9,452 for its phonics program from 100% For Kids Credit Union Education Foundation.
The foundation also awarded $5,000 to Salem Elementary for a balanced literacy library.
Nebo School District's CRT scores from 2006 indicated that 83 percent of students in grades 1-11 read at grade level, which is above the state and national levels, according to a district statement.
The district will use the money to structure an intense phonics program to help struggling students. Teachers will undergo hands-on activities and classes that will enable them to work directly with struggling readers.
Salem Elementary's current library is small and only has a few books for each reading level. Many books are old and worn. New books will better serve the 400-student school.
This year, 100% For Kids reached the $4 million mark in grants money awarded to Utah schools since its inception in 2002.
