FAIRFIELD — Camp Floyd History Camps for kids are being offered for a second season.

A fun educational experience that focuses on the lives of soldiers at Camp Floyd in 1861, campers meet costumed interpreters, play 19th century games, drill, set up a soldier's camp, fire a 1960s period firearm and make period-appropriate craft items. They participate in a full-scale military exercise and watch muskets and cannons fired.

Participants will get a 2007 history camp T-shirt, Union or Confederate kepi, replica rifle, canteen, haversack, harmonica and more. (Campers return home each day on furlough.) Carpooling information can be provided. These programs are for boys and girls, 8-11 years old. Each camp is limited to 24 participants and will run from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. daily. Reservations and $65 camp fee are required.

Participants may choose from four dates:

June 21-23

July 12-14

July 26-28

Aug. 9-11

Established in 1858, Camp Floyd housed the largest concentration of U.S. troops then in the United States. The troops were sent to Utah to suppress a rumored Mormon rebellion, which never took place. The army was recalled back east in 1861 due to the outbreak of the Civil War.
