PROVO Provo will be adding to its inventory of community trees thanks to an Arbor Day planting project being kicked off at 9 a.m. Saturday at Farrer Elementary School, 600 E. Center.
Mayor Lewis Billings will welcome community members who have volunteered to plant 35 trees throughout the Joaquin and Maeser neighborhoods. Scott Zeidler, the state community forester, will present Provo City Power's Forestry Division with its 22nd Tree City USA award and its 10th Tree Line USA award. These awards are given based on a list of criteria for supporting and maintaining urban forests within cities.
Provo City Power's Forestry Division maintains some 45,000 trees throughout the city.
Following the Arbor Day program the volunteers will fan out into the Joaquin and Maeser neighborhoods to plant street trees. Community members are encouraged to join in the planting.
