After reading Elaine Jarvik's article April 24 about the talk given by Sudan's ambassador at the University of Utah, I feel I must set the record straight. I, too, attended Sudanese Ambassador John Ukec Lueth Ukec's talk. While the ambassador struck me as a good and decent man, one must remember he is the representative of his despotic government's ruler, Omar al-Bashir. As such, he spent an hour spewing his government's line of nonsense, going on and on about the fact the horrors in Darfur are the lamentable result of his government's "mistake" in giving guns to the renegade Janjaweed militia. But he blanched when asked about al-Bashir's current subterfuge: painting Sudanese military gunships white, falsely bearing the markings of the United Nations to escape international detection as they conduct killing raids against the innocent Darfuri civilians. A government willing to bastardize and sully the United Nations and defy the voice of a world community raised in outrage against this genocide is not to be believed.
