Utah guv stumps for McCain at GOP meeting in Nevada
Huntsman will attend the Nevada Republican Party Central Committee meeting in Carson City as a "surrogate" for McCain, who is a U.S. senator from Arizona. The governor is supporting McCain's bid for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008.
The location of the meeting is notable because during a March visit, McCain said he supported the Yucca Mountain nuclear-waste facility, even if it meant shipping the waste through other states. Huntsman said he would not support shipping waste through Utah but also downplayed the disagreement and told reporters that it would not change his support for the Arizona senator.
"The governor and Sen. McCain agree on the importance of nuclear power and that it has to be an important part of an energy strategy," communications coordinator Lisa Roskelley said. "But they disagree on disposal," because Huntsman would prefer on-site waste storage.
