"Each of (the alternative) speakers represents a clear and successful alternative to Dick Cheney's actions and policies," BYU student Carl Brinton said. "While Cheney stands for big business, Nader stands for the rights and protection of the consumer. While Cheney stands for degradation of constitutional and human rights, Healey stands for vigorous protection of those rights. While Cheney stands for increased executive power and decreased transparency, Ashdown has done more than any other individual in Utah to make this a government for the people."

Several rallies or protests are planned for the same day.

The director of the Salt Lake City chapter of the Veterans for Peace told the Deseret Morning News Friday that the group will demonstrate against the Iraq war on the corner of Bulldog Boulevard and Canyon Road from noon to 6 p.m.

That will put the veterans catty corner from the BYU College Democrats, the student club that is the only group with permission to protest on campus. The club plans to demonstrate for peace, not specifically to protest Cheney's visit.

Veterans for Peace director Aaron M. Davis said the group wants to educate the public on the costs of war. Its theme is "support the troops, bring them home now, and take care of them when they get here."

"We'll be marching around that block doing chants, singing some songs and doing some old cadences," said Davis, a BYU graduate and former Marine and Army officer.

The group has applied for a permit with Provo city, city chief administrative officer Wayne Parker confirmed.

A group called We the People for Peace and Justice also plans a protest, while a group being organized by local Republicans is planning a rally to support Cheney, possibly at the Provo City Library at Academy Square.
