The winners and the losers

Loser: Alec Baldwin is the latest victim of the public "gotcha." His profanity-laced tirade to his 11-year-old daughter, left on her cell phone voice mail, was posted this week on a popular Web site. The judge overseeing the terms of Baldwin's messy divorce with Kim Basinger subsequently suspended the father's visitation rights.

Baldwin joins a long line of prominent people to be recorded and exposed acting badly, from Don Imus to Michael Richards to Mel Gibson and beyond. In the modern age of ubiquitous recording devices, no tantrum is truly private. Unfortunately, Baldwin and whoever leaked his tirade to the Web site, and the Web site itself all have succeeded in humiliating a child, which is a far worse matter.

Winner: Utah's unemployment rate rose by one-tenth of a percentage point in March. But that means it went from 2.3 percent to 2.4 percent. In other words, the economy here still is chugging along at an unheard-of pace. The Utah Department of Workforce Services reports that wage growth is the strongest the state has seen in 15 years. People are moving to Utah in droves. No matter how you slice it, these are good times, indeed.
