A few pieces of advice for Jazz playoff newcomers

Now that the Jazz are securely in the playoffs for the first time since 2003, where do they go from here? Call it good and book that beach house for the summer?

Probably not. If these kids know anything about Jerry Sloan's playoff mode, they won't so much as watch a movie until all the basketball season is over.

With the exception of Derek Fisher, who has 117 games of playoff experience, the Jazz are virtual newcomers to the postseason. For many of them, this will be the first time they'll get a look at Tracy McGrady when he REALLY wants to score. Thus, in the interest of community service, I have included a list of tactics the Jazz should consider if they intend to play beyond the end of next week:.

Stay clear of Joey. That shouldn't be too hard, considering Joey has been suspended indefinitely. Still, you never know.

"Joey" is Joey Crawford, the cantankerous veteran NBA referee who this week tossed Tim Duncan from a game for laughing at him. Reports say Crawford heard Duncan snickering at his calls from the bench and said, "You want to fight?" before tossing the perennial All-Star.

Story continues below
Oddly enough, Crawford can be a road team's best friend. He isn't afraid to make a call against the home crowd. But when his ego interferes, he becomes more interested in being a tough guy than a referee.

If he does somehow make it back for the playoffs, the best advice is to let Joey believe he is the most important person on the court.

Otherwise, he'll try to prove it.

Get tough. You young guys think the regular season was hard, but wait 'til things really amp up. Just when your body is worn down from an 82-game schedule, you're supposed to pick it up a notch — dive for all the loose balls, run down every breakaway, grab every rebound and block out on every shot.

All for a measly few thousand playoff dollars, usually less than you'll make in a single game.

But this is where a player can actually earn his next big contract.

Mike Brown had a nice nine-game playoff run in 1991 and ended up landing a multiyear deal. He never played as well afterward, but when his contract was on the line, he delivered. So, then, did the Jazz.

Humor Jerry. Don't laugh during practice, don't party late at night, don't tour Space Center Houston on a day trip.

Nothing will put you in the doghouse faster than having fun while you're at work.

Come to think of it, the best thing to do is to act as though you're going to war — or on the Bill O'Reilly show, whichever takes more courage.
