SHORT ATTENTION SPAN THEATRE, UVSC Blackbox Theatre, Gunther Trades Building, 800 W. University Parkway, closes April 21 (863-8797). Running time: 2 hours (10 minute intermission).

They're whimsical, imaginative, silly, unique and short.

Touted as a 10-minute play festival, the 7th annual Short Attention Span Theatre features original plays by students at Utah Valley State College. Most of these shorts really shine.

Sadly, some of them lack the polish to really glisten.

"DTR," by Karen Richards, directed by Steven Driggs; stage manager, Karen Richards. Cast: Cooper Howell as Matt and Jaclyn Hales as Ashley. This amusing look at the "dating game" delves into the psyche of male/female interpretations on everything from body language to eating habits. It is well-written and successfully defines the difference between "going out" and "hanging out."

"My Wife Knows Her Place," by Mary Ann Vaughan, directed by Karen Richards; stage manager, Katie Baxter. Cast: Steve Driggs as Joe, Chris Clark as Billy, and Julie Mortimer as the bartender. This is the favorite of the night. Picture two men in a bar. One is bemoaning his wife's feminist attitudes, the other telling him how important it is to take control of the house so the wife doesn't wear out or become muscular from mopping. One wife has joined a feminist club, the other a knitting club. As the plot unfolds it is only time before both realize there is only one club.

"Got Jesus?" by Dan Groves, directed by Ashley Grant; stage manager, Karen Richards. Cast: Jordan Cummings as Bill and Gary Reimer as James. This script puts an interesting twist on guilt. It has an intriguing ending, but getting there is excruciating. Those not caught up in philosophy lingo may find this play's convoluted words falling on deaf ears.

"Almost Jedi," by Jacob Lauretzen, directed by Laura Garner; stage manager is DeAnna Ashworth. Cast: Brian Randall as Norman, Justin Colledge as Tim, Chris Clark as the security guard and James Croft as the mystery guest. This piece investigates two young men who go beyond fanatical in the desire to become Jedi knights. The reality that life as we know it doesn't have Jedi knights doesn't seem to thwart these guys in their efforts. From light-saber fights to mind control with the wave of a hand, these "Star Wars" junkies think it's all real. This script vocalized what many of us think about those who get too caught up in the unreal.
