LAS VEGAS Three Las Vegas pitchers kept Salt Lake hitters at bay as the 51s edged the Bees 2-1 on Monday night. Eric Stults (1-0) gave up a first-inning run and then stifled a pair of scoring opportunities for the Bees after Andy LaRoche hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first to put Las Vegas ahead 2-1.
In the second inning, Salt Lake had runners at first and second, but Stults got Casey Smith to ground into a force out and Adam Pavkovich to hit into a double play.
In the third, Terry Evans led off with a triple, but Stults fanned both Jeff Mathis and Brandon Wood and then retired Kendry Morales on a fly ball to right field. Kasey Olenberger (1-1) pitched well enough to win, as he went seven innings and allowed just two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. Smith led the Bees with two hits, while Evans' triple extended his hitting streak to 11 games.
