Residents say they're the real losers in mayor-council suits

Bluffdale resident Herb C. Flower said he believes the mayor was justified in taking the matter to court.

"I voted for a mayor," Flower said. "The City Council was the back-up band, not the reason I bought the concert tickets. If the mayor sues the City Council, I don't say, 'Bad mayor.' I think every member of that City Council should resign."

Other residents, however, believe it's the mayor who should go.

The most recent lawsuit Anderson filed against the City Council dealt with the council's refusal to recognize former state Rep. Dave Hogue, R-Riverton, as the city's administrative services director. The City Council's contention that Anderson did not have the authority to appoint Hogue to the position — or to fire his predecessor, Brent Bluth — was upheld by the court.

In addition to the $60,000-plus in taxpayer money spent as a result of the feud, some residents say Bluffdale's reputation is being destroyed by the governmental bickering.

"Our city has gotten to a point that there is little trust for the mayor or the City Council," said one man who requested not to be identified for this story. "It's a big ego thing on both sides, and taxpayer money is being used because of it."
