From Deseret News archives:
BYU's starting QB to be named soon
"We'll make an announcement most likely Monday," he said. "We had a strategy put in place to sit down with the coaching staff first, then the quarterbacks."
One of those vying for the starting role, junior Cade Cooper, suffered a foot injury early in the scrimmage, and was replaced by Brenden Gaskins, who led the Cougars on a 12-play, 97-yard touchdown drive.
But Mendenhall said the decision will be based on the entire four weeks of spring practices.
"I don't think one particular day changes the battle," he said. "What it does do is allows us a different perspective on the number of players that might be considered."
Sophomore Max Hall feels good about his performance the past month.
"I think I had a good spring and I feel real confident in myself. I'm just excited to go through the summer workouts and get ready for the fall," he said.
As for naming a starter, Hall knows it's the coaches' call.
"It's their decision," he said. "I feel confident in what I did this spring. I feel good about it. Whatever happens happens. I'm going to keep working my tail off to get better every day."
LEGENDS GAME: Prior to the spring game, a number of former Cougars suited up to play in the annual BYU Legends Game.
Philadelphia Eagle Reno Mahe caught a touchdown pass, as did a former Eagle, Chad Lewis.
Other notables who participated include Jamal Willis, James Dye and Jason Buck.
HOUSE OF PAYNE: Redshirt freshman Mitch Payne is set to handle both punting and placekicking duties this fall for the Cougars.
On Saturday, he missed a 46-yard field goal that sailed wide right, then nailed a 27-yarder. Later, a 52-yard attempt went wide left. He also converted his only PAT attempt.
Payne's longest punt of the day traveled 45 yards.
