Hogle Zoo is taking part in an international party to help promote better care of Mother Earth.
The event is being sponsored by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, which is hosting 141 parties in 42 states and two countries.
The Salt Lake version of the association's "Party for the Planet" will take place at Utah's Hogle Zoo from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. during its Earth Day celebration Saturday.
The event will feature hands-on activities such as making recycled paper," coordinator Song Stott said, along with a variety of food booths and information about hybrid cars. In addition, Salt Lake Mayor Rocky Anderson will speak at noon in the main plaza about community efforts that could make a difference globally.
As a member of the AZA, Hogle Zoo is part of a conservation movement to preserve the environment.
Food service supervisor Seth Palmer said, "Whenever we can, we use paper products that are not only biodegradable and compostable, but also made from byproducts of organic materials."
Zoo officials say they also promote innovative animal-care practices to ensure species survival.
Live entertainment, including Polynesian dancers, will also be featured during the Party for the Planet, and the festivities will be free with paid zoo admission. Visitors can also get $1 off zoo admission by bringing 12 aluminum cans or an old cell phone to the ticket office.
