Fire set in lake marshes

A burn in the wetlands of the Great Salt Lake is clearly visible from a plane approaching the Salt Lake airport Saturday. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources set the flames in an attempt to control an invasive, non-native plant called phragmites. The ornamental plant has no food value, offers no cover for waterfowl and pushes out the marsh's valuable plants. The plants, which were killed by spraying earlier, are being burned so native plants can grow. RAVELL CALL,
