• It is odious to a shy person to be snubbed, especially when the shy person is right. If no one will accept the book as it is, I will get it printed myself.

• I remember I used to half believe and wholly play with fairies when I was a child. What heaven can be more real than to retain the spirit world of childhood, tempered and balanced by knowledge and common sense.

• What a thing it is to have a family!

• This little corner of the country should be kept unchanged for people who appreciate its beauty. I have always tried to show unspoilt nature in my books. If I have done anything, even a little, to help small children enjoy honest, simple pleasures, I have done a bit of good."
