From Deseret News archives:
Plenty to do on Easter weekend
Good weather will bring many to Utah rec sites
Golf courses will be busy, most state and national parks will be full and people will be lining up along popular hiking and biking trails.
According to records from the Utah Division of Parks and Recreation, only six of its 43 parks had camping areas open as of Wednesday.
Millsite had six sites open, Yuba had 12, Utah Lake had 24, Wasatch Mountain had 24, East Canyon 32 and Willard Bay 24.
To reserve one of the campsites call 800-322-3770 or 322-3770.
Those camping areas that can be reserved at the national parks are taken, and those people hoping to get one of the sites open on a first-come, first-served basis should arrive early.
Ten of Utah's 13 ski areas are open and are holding a good base. The best skiing will be midmorning.
The report earlier this week showed Alta with a 95-inch base, Brighton with 80, Deer Valley with 69, Park City Mountain Resort with 70 and Snowbird with 85 inches.
The three resorts that are closed are Sundance, Beaver Mountain and Wolf Mountain.
Several of the resorts will be holding Easter-related events, such as egg hunts for the children, over the weekend.
One of the more popular routes is riding the 7-mile causeway to Antelope Island. The road is flat with little traffic. A number of riding opportunities also are available on the island along paved roads and dirt trails.
Another is a ride around Farmington Bay Bird Refuge. The ride starts at the Davis County Courthouse (State and Main) in Farmington. Riders then head west to the edge of Farmington Bay Bird Refuge and on to the refuge. Great wildlife viewing opportunities abound.
The Rail Trail mountain-bicycle route represents 29 miles of public trail going from Park City to Wanship. The route follows the abandoned rail lines and is not only open to biking but also horseback riding, jogging and nature walks.
Antelope Island is a great place to hike or view wildlife. More than 700 buffalo roam the island, and it's not difficult to spot one of the shaggy animals wandering about.
