JEROME, Idaho — The Magic Valley Horseman's Association is trying to revive equestrian activities in southern Idaho, and as part of that plan is welcoming all breeds of horses.

That means people with everything from quarter horses to Arabians and miniature horses can join the group and take part in gatherings.

"We're trying to get the families and kids, who are interested in horses, a place where they can learn how to get involved," Jim Pierce, vice president of the association, told The Times-News. "A lot of times, the kids will ask where they can do team roping, barrel racing or other events, so this is a way they can get involved."

The association, less than two years old, held its second expo and horse show over the weekend at the Jerome County Fairgrounds.

One of those taking part was 13-year-old Morgan Jones, participating with her 4-H club.

"We seem to have less people in 4-H," said Jones. "But I think you have to be willing to work and learn to be a member because you have to know how to work with a horse. You have to talk to it — not like a person 'cause that would be weird — but you have to let it know when it does something good."

The association has about 70 active families in southern Idaho.

"Our association covers just about everything you can do on a horse," Pierce said.

At the weekend gathering, that included the Idaho Mounted Shooters, who shoot balloons on horseback.

Besides exhibitions, the weekend event also has a stallion sale, equestrian expo, and opportunities for people to buy or trade tack and supplies.

The association also hosts clinics where horse owners can get information on the training and caring of their animals.

Horse owners also get the chance to meet with other owners to learn skills and tips, or perhaps set up group rides.
