5 are nominated for seat on bench

PROVO — Five attorneys have been nominated to replace retiring 4th District Court Judge Anthony Schofield. Schofield will retire April 30.

The 4th District Judicial Nominating Commission selected Lorie Fowlke, Thomas Low, Darold McDade, Leslie Slaugh and M. James Brady as finalists. Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. will make the final decision after a 10-day public comment period.

Comments about the candidates can be sent to the chairman of the nominating commission, Kevin Worthen, at Administrative Office of the Courts, P.O. Box 140241, Salt Lake City, UT 84114-0241.

The deadline is April 5 at 5 p.m.

Fowlke, who also is a GOP state representative from Orem, is an attorney with Scribner & McCandless in Provo; Low is the Wasatch county attorney; and McDade is an assistant Utah attorney general who lives in Pleasant Grove.

Slaugh practices law in Orem with the firm Howard, Lewis and Peterson, and Brady, who is mayor of Mapleton, practices with the firm Bradford and Brady.

After the 10-day comment period, Huntsman will have 30 days to select a candidate. That name is then presented to the Senate Confirmation Committee for a public hearing and interview session.

The next step is the Utah State Senate that has 60 days to confirm the nominee.
