All in a day: Winter, summer activities mix well
10 a.m. Stepped into the four-passenger gondola on the Mayflower side of Deer Valley. Buckled the ski boots, slipped on a pair of lightweight gloves and a windbreaker, dabbed on some sunscreen and enjoyed the ride to the top of the mountain.
10:10 a.m. Started the morning by skiing down to Snow Park Lodge, then hopped on the four-passenger, high-speed lift to ride to the top of Bald Eagle Mountain, then down to Silver Lake Lodge and onto the Sterling Express lift to the top of Bald Mountain elevation 9,400 feet.
This was followed by runs off the Wasatch Express, Suntan Express, the Crown triple and Deer Crest lifts, and then some final turns down the Jordanelle run and back to the gondola.
Skiing conditions were springlike good base on the higher runs with enough snow left by groomers to hold a solid edge, and softer snow conditions on the lower runs.
12:15 p.m. Loaded the skis and boots into the car, pulled onto Highway 40 for the 15-minute ride to Soldier Hollow Golf Course in Midway.
Two lost golf balls, five found golf balls, averting disaster at two water hazards and a half-dozen missed putts later, the first round of golf for this year was completed.
4 p.m. Shifted the golf clubs and skis off to the left, rolled out the mountain bike, hooked up the helmet, tied on the biking shoes and then shifted the bike into its highest gear and pushed down hard on the pedal to get the bike moving.
Skiing, golfing and mountain biking, all in a day. It could have been snowmobiling, golfing and hiking, or fly fishing on the Provo and golfing or skiing or mountain biking or hiking or cross country skiing or riding an ATV on the spider web of trails open to Cascade Springs.
The point being: It's possible. That is, mixing a traditional winter sport and established summer activities into one spring day.
Spring is not the only time summer and winter activities are possible on the same day, but it's the best time to work in the combination. The snow is on the ground, and even in the leaner seasons, like this one, there's enough to accommodate skiers and snowmobilers in the spring. At the same time, the snow line has moved high enough to make summer activities possible.
