PROVO — More than 700 young inventors and scientists will compete for $30,000 in cash and scholarships at the Central Utah Science and Engineering Fair Monday through Thursday at the BYU Conference Center.

In addition to the awards, students in grades 5-12 from the southern Wasatch Front will vie for the opportunity to represent central Utah at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, the country's largest pre-college science competition.

Last year's BYU winner, Shannon Babb from American Fork High School, was also a winner of a $100,000 science scholarship from the Intel Science Talent Search. She received other awards, including a chance to attend the 2006 Nobel Prize Award Ceremony in Stockholm, Sweden.

The Central Utah Science and Engineering Fair is open to students in the Alpine, Jordan, Nebo, Provo and Wasatch school districts, upon approval from district fair officiators.

The fair is supported by the BYU David O. McKay School of Education and the BYU-Public School Partnership, as well as the colleges of biology and agriculture, physical and mathematical sciences and engineering and technology.
