Utah Scorpions' Matt Bambrough drives to the goal line, right, during a quad rugby match against the Phoenix Heat at the University of Utah. At bottom left, Bambrough is blocked by Jesse Honl of the Texas Stampede. The athletes were competing in Mountain Division sectionals being held this week at the U.
Quad rugby, or wheelchair rugby, was originally called "murderball" due to the game's aggressive nature. It was introduced in the United States in 1981, and a 2005 documentary titled "Murderball" won a top Sundance honor and was nominated for an Academy Award.
Players may have various disabilities to compete. They must have a combination of upper and lower extremity impairment, and most have suffered cervical-level spinal injuries.
Competition will resume today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to noon.
Utah's only team, the Scorpions, is ranked 18th.
