Spanish Fork hearing over bond is quiet

A public hearing Tuesday for a $22 million bond that Spanish Fork city plans to issue in the next two months was uneventful.

The $22 million will serve two purposes. Most of it, $18 million, will be used to build the city's new police and courts facility. The remaining $4 million will be used for infrastructure improvements to make way for the large commercial development being planned in the North Park area.

Only one resident spoke at the public hearing, asking why the bond had increased from the $14 million limit the city had set when it first discussed the bond last year.

City leaders explained that the building had to be expanded from its original planned size to accommodate the police department, and construction costs have significantly increased in the past year, both of which drove up the building's price tag.

The remaining $4 million for the North Park improvements was lumped in with the bond in order to reduce financing costs, officials said.
