The winners and the losers

Winner: Once again, DNA evidence has help police make new connections in a cold case. This past week, Woods Cross police arrested Edward Owens, 56, for investigation in the 1980 strangulation death of Karin Strom. DNA under Strom's fingernails reportedly matched Owens', who was arraigned Friday. The analysis, performed at Sorenson Forensics in Salt Lake City, has also helped crack three cold cases under investigation by Salt Lake Police Department.

Loser: Here's the buzz on bees: They're disappearing in droves, which may be due to viruses, pesticides, fungus, mites or a lack of nutrition. No one knows for sure. But more agriculture scientists had better make a beeline to laboratories to determine a reason and a possible fix because bees' pollination services are key to a third of the world's food production.

Winner: DePauw University held the line with Delta Zeta sorority following a mass eviction of members who said they were removed because of their appearances. The university president has ordered the sorority to leave campus by fall, noting the sorority's values were "incompatible" with those of the 2,200-student private college in Greencastle, Ind. Sorority members say the 23 evictions were based on members' lack of commitment to recruiting new members.
