What Laird Roberts fails to recognize is that radiation also cures cancer. As the grandson of downwinders, it is very important to me that we examine open-air testing on the facts and not just our emotional response. But it is disingenuous to compare open-air testing of nuclear weapons to storage of items at EnergySolutions. Realistically, it's like comparing the weapons dropped on Hiroshima to your household smoke detector.
We need to recognize that we're surrounded by radiation. Every granite building in Utah is radioactive. And I don't think we need to panic if we enter the state Capitol we'll get cancer. We walk outside even though the sun produces electromagnetic radiation.
EnergySolutions stores objects that contain our nation's lowest rating for radiological hazard. That Class-A waste also includes your household smoke detectors.
