• Red Butte Garden's "Gardening in Utah," Saturday, 10 a.m.-noon. Gardening in a high-desert environment can be tricky. You'll learn about climatic zones, microclimates, frost dates, soil types, recommended soil amendments and recommended plants for the Salt Lake Valley. Regular garden admission/members free. • Wasatch Community Gardens' "Soul of Soil" workshop, Saturday, 10 a.m.-noon, Grateful Tomato Garden, 800 South 600 East. Great organic gardens start with the soil. Learn how to sustain soil life and improve it with USU Extension specialist Maggie Wolf. Free, seating is limited. Call to reserve your spot, 359-2658.

• March Tool Drive: Wasatch Community Gardens needs your used tools. Drop them off Saturday at the organization's Fairpark Garden open house, 1-3 p.m. Or contact Sarah at 359-2658 or admin@wasatchgardens.org to arrange a donation. The Fairpark Garden is at 1037 W. 300 North (www.wasatchgardens.org).

• Thanksgiving Point rose pruning, March 17, 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m., and March 19, 12:30-2 p.m. Come prepared for a hands-on session of learning to select, prune and care for roses. You will go into the rose garden at Thanksgiving Point. Fee: $15. Come prepared for the weather and bring pruners, hat and gloves (call 801-768-7443 to register).
