Sled hockey

TOURNAMENT THIS WEEK: The National Ability Center will host the second annual Great Salt Cup Sled Hockey tournament at the Park City Ice Arena. The event will run Thursday through Saturday. Competing teams will come from all over the United States, including Phoenix, Chicago and Colorado, along with the NAC team from Utah.

Games Thursday are at 7:45 and 9:15 p.m.; Friday at 7:30 and 9 a.m. and 7:30 and 9:30 p.m.; and Saturday at 8:30 a.m. with the championship game at 10 a.m.

Sled hockey allows people with physical disabilities affecting their lower limbs to play the sport of hockey. Despite the use of adaptive equipment, the game follows the same format as traditional hockey.

BYU BASEBALL: BYU was tied Monday through 8 2/3 innings before four unearned runs led to a 5-1 victory for Kansas State. KSU, now 10-2, won its home opener over the Cougars, now 8-4, in the first of a two-game series as BYU's five-game winning streak came to an end. The two teams have a rematch on today at 3 p.m.

SOFTBALL: Today's game between Utah Valley State and Southern Utah has been postponed.

Auto racing

MEARS VISIT: Casey Mears, driver of the No. 25 National Guard/GMAC Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports, will visit Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele on Thursday at 4 p.m. to meet and greet fans.

Mears' race car and the Miller show trailer will also stop at several locations in northern Utah this week to meet and greet fans.

This marks Mears' fifth season on the Nextel Cup circuit. He will also drive 22 races in the No. 24 National Guard Chevrolet in the NASCAR Busch Series. In 2006, he became the first full-time NASCAR driver to be part of a winning Grand American Rolex 24 team and finished second to now-teammate Jimmie Johnson in the prestigious Daytona 500. In July, Mears won his first career NASCAR race at Chicagoland Speedway in Busch Series competition.

High schools

EAST FUND-RAISER: A fund-raising dinner featuring former Jazz president Frank Layden will be held at Emigration Market Cafe on March 14 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The cost is $100 per person. There will be live auctions and raffles during the evening. Sponsored by the East Baseball Boosters, the purpose is to raise money to improve equipment and facilities for the East High baseball team.
