PROVO — Utah Jazzman Mehmet Okur paid a visit to Meridian students recently after the private school placed first in the statewide Scholastic Utah Jazz Readathon.

Students read an average of 1,647 minutes each outside of class between Jan. 12-Feb. 12 to win the visit. Because the school is small, an average is taken, which gave the school a chance to compete, said school secretary Gail Higgins.

Okur signed memorabilia — socks, shoes and papers — for the students as he interacted with them, and demonstrated free-throw shooting.

It wasn't the first time the school has earned a visit from a Jazz player. Meridian has been one of the top 12 schools in the state contest for the past two years, receiving a Jazz player visit each time.
