Marxist socialism is different

Regarding Mr. Payne's letter (Readers' forum, Feb. 27), Sweden and Great Britain are not Marxist socialist states. The means of production remain in private hands. Those countries are labeled "socialist" — as are we in some measure — because of social programs that redistribute income. Money is taken by the state from A's higher income and given to B, who has a lower income.

As I understand it, Hugo Chavez of Venezuela and others of his ilk wish to establish socialism on authoritarian Marxist lines, a far different matter.
