BOISE — Ada County sheriff's deputies detained 15 people after Nampa police came across a cockfighting event that was apparently just getting started in Kuna.

Officers with the Idaho Humane Society helped impound 19 gamecock roosters found in a barn on Saturday. No birds had been killed, but three were bleeding and were treated at the Humane Society's animal hospital.

Police reported razor gaffes and blood at a ring typically used for cockfighting.

Nampa police followed a suspected DUI driver to the residence and found two roosters in crates in his vehicle. They also said they saw about 50 people fleeing the area in pickup trucks and called for additional help.

"It looks like this thing had just been getting started," said Jeff Rosenthal, executive director of the Idaho Humane Society.

He said the different types of crates indicated the roosters belonged to many different people.

In Idaho, cockfighting is considered a misdemeanor.
