RSL goalkeeper opts to retire

Scott Garlick, who was projected to be Real Salt Lake's starting keeper in 2007, has decided to retire.

The veteran keeper announced his decision to the team Tuesday evening in Orlando, Fla., just two days before the team was to finalize its roster for the upcoming season.

Garlick, 34, spent 10 years in MLS with six different teams. In his only year with RSL last year, he started 31 of 32 games.

Garlick will pursue a non-soccer business opportunity. His decision leaves RSL scrambling to find a replacement veteran keeper to help tutor 2007 first-round draft choice Chris Seitz, who is currently in Japan playing exhibition games with the United States Under-23 National Team.

Garlick's last action as a professional goalkeeper was last Thursday in an exhibition game with Columbus in Tampa. He didn't played in the club's two games over the weekend at the Disney Wide World of Sports so Real's coaching staff could have opportunity to evaluate rookie keeper Kyle Reynish and second-year keeper Chase Harrison.
