Recent wins gave Bobcats confidence
Regardless of Murray's lofty No. 2 ranking, Hansen knew that despite finishing fifth in the extremely tough Region 5, the competitive league had prepared his team to make a run in the playoffs.
That's exactly what the Bobcats did in the opening round of the 4A State Tournament.
Freshman Amy Andrus poured in 20 points while teammate Kelsey Naylor drained a clutch 3-pointer in the waning seconds as Sky View hung on for the surprising 69-67 victory over Murray at Salt Lake Community College Tuesday afternoon.
"We lost a lot of games early, and we just kept preaching be ready by February, and it's February, and we've won four in a row," said Hansen.
One victory in particular a 44-39 triumph over Box Elder on Feb. 8 gave the Bobcats more than enough confidence heading into the state tournament.
Sky View (11-10) will try and make it five straight in this Thursday's 4A quarterfinal against Provo (15-6) at 6 p.m.
Hansen doesn't expect anything less than another back-and-forth thriller.
Murray opened the fourth quarter on a 16-2 run to pull ahead 60-57 with under four minutes remaining.
That's when Hansen believed the experience of playing so many competitive games in Region 5 began to pay dividends. With Murray threatening to blow the game open, Sky View's Lindee McKinley and Andrus scored on consecutive possession to help Sky View regain the 61-60 lead.
Murray's Chavalah Washington, who led all scorers with 25 points, put the Spartans back in front 62-61 with 2:19 remaining as the teams continued to trade baskets and free throws down the stretch.
