Upset opener: Lancers just good enough to advance
"I thought we could have been better defensively and we could have boxed out better," said Lancer coach Rob Reisbeck after Layton earned a quarterfinal berth with a 63-56 win over Brighton. "Offensively, we executed pretty well. And that was important because they score a lot."
The game was about as close as they get with the scores tied at the end of the first and second quarters. Layton scored two more points than the Bengals in the third quarter, but it was late in the fourth when they started to pull away.
Lancer guard Sheila Adams played on a sprained ankle, but it wasn't evident by her performance.
"I didn't want to put her through a whole game yet," said Reisbeck. "But I didn't see any sign of it (hurting)."
Despite sitting parts of three quarters, Adams earned 19 points, while forward Kodi Cartwright led the team with 20 points. Forward Michelle Carver added 12 points and guard Amber Strong contributed nine points in the win.
"It was impressive that our other kids played so well," Reisbeck said. "Our posts have been awesome the last four games. Which has been nice because that makes us balanced."
The win means Layton, a No. 2 seed from region 1, will face Bingham, region 3s top seed, in Wednesday's quarterfinals at 4:10 p.m. at SLCC's Lifetime Activity Center.
