DELLE, Tooele County — A car fire early Sunday apparently claimed the life of one person and left a 24-year-old man in critical condition.

The Tooele County Sheriff's Office said the suspicious incident was reported about 6:39 a.m. by an I-80 motorist who noticed an SUV on fire, on a dirt road north of the freeway.

Responding deputies found a 24-year-old Hispanic man lying on the ground about 50 feet from the car with burns covering more than 50 percent of his body and a wound to his neck. The man later underwent surgery and was in critical but stable condition Sunday night.

After firefighters extinguished the car fire, they discovered a badly burned body in the back seat of the car. Medical examiners were working to determine the exact cause of death.

The sheriff's office did not release the age or gender of the dead person, nor the name of the injured man. It was also concealing the name of the hospital where the man was being treated to protect the only known witness to the incident.

Sheriff Frank Park asked if anyone was in the area of mile-marker 70, near the Delle exit, and saw anything suspicious early Sunday, to call the Tooele County Sheriff's Office at 435-882-5600.
