Rain causes rockslide near Yosemite to shift

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Calif. (AP) — Heavy rainfall caused a massive rockslide at the entrance of Yosemite National Park to shift slightly, sending grapefruit-size rocks tumbling onto Highway 140.

The Ferguson Rockslide, which closed the entrance to the park last year, moved a couple inches after about 2 inches of rainfall over the weekend, said Al Arredondo of the California Highway Patrol.

The shift did not force highway officials to close detours built around the slide last year and no major slide was expected, said Troy Bowers, a spokesman with the state Transportation Department.

"The rain acts like a lubricant and it sloughs off the stuff on the top," he said. "It's not a big deal."
