• Weight: Rocky Mountain — ram 300 pounds, ewe 180 pounds; desert — ram 150 pounds, ewe 100 pounds

• Mature: 2 years

• Mating season: November through December

• Number of young: one or two

• Life span: 10 to 15 years

• Diet: grasses and forbs

Facts:

• Head-to-head combat known to last up to 24 hours between two rams.

• Male horns can weigh up to 30 pounds. They stop growing during rut, which allows biologists to age sheep.

• Bony core of the horn is honeycombed with air chambers to reduce weight.

• Desert bighorn requires little or no water in the winter and during the hotter summer months drinks about every three days.
