Miller finally saw the light, did right thing for A.D.

With everything going on in the world of sports, today we're talking everything from retiring numbers to recruiting to Real to RPIs and even wrestling ...

As one of the main proponents behind the retirement of Adrian Dantley's number the last few years, I was happy to hear Larry Miller and the Jazz have FINALLY seen the light and will hoist A.D.'s jersey to the rafters in April. It's long overdue. Dantley has been gone for more than 20 years, yet in the meantime seven numbers have been retired, including those of Mark Eaton and Jeff Hornacek, great guys though they were, but nothing close to the player Dantley was ...

With Dantley's number getting retired, that makes No. 4 the most popular retired number in Utah. Besides Dantley, Andrew Bogut's No. 4 was retired by the University of Utah last year and just last Saturday, Kim Smith's No. 4 became the first women's number to be retired at the U.

Then there's Jerry Sloan. Although it wasn't retired in Utah, Sloan has his No. 4 hanging from the rafters in Chicago ...

So let me get this straight. The Utah Jazz not only own the third-best record in the Western Conference, but the third-best record in the entire NBA, yet they won't even have one player among the 24 all-stars in Las Vegas next week? Are you kidding me? OK, I know Carlos Boozer was selected, but somehow Mehmet Okur should have found a spot on the Western Conference team ...

The Jazz have a 3-0 advantage over the Phoenix Suns in games played this year, but somehow the Suns will have a 3-0 advantage over the Jazz at the All-Star game ...

I don't know why there was any hand-wringing on either side about the Real stadium deal over the past many months. Like I said a few months ago, you knew the local politicians and powers-that-be were going to find a way to ramrod the deal through, no matter what the majority of people thought ...

Big news of the week is that former Jazzman John Amaechi is gay. So? ...

Although BYU football coach Bronco Mendenhall has done a terrific job in turning around the Cougar football program the past couple of years, he still has a penchant for silly statements. Saying BYU "won't lose to anybody" in future in-state recruiting wars is either delusional or the height of arrogance ...

The Mountain West Conference basketball race has turned into a division between the haves and the have-nots. The four teams at the top all have a good chance to make the NCAA tournament, although San Diego State has the most work to do. But with Air Force, UNLV and BYU all in the top 25 in the RPI rankings, count on them making the NCAAs, barring a late-season collapse. The other five are jockeying to stay out of the play-in game with the outside hope of earning an NCAA berth by winning the tournament ...

And finally, I for one, thought it was neat that Uintah's Candace Workman competed over the weekend at the state 3A wrestling meet, where she finished sixth in the 103-pound division. I caught her interview on television where she said a few boys had refused to wrestle her because of "moral" reasons. That's fine if they choose not to compete against her. But she made a great point when she said wrestling was a sport, that there was nothing sexual about it and that if there was, then why did the boys wrestle against other boys?

Probably the main reason the boys refused to wrestle her was the fear of losing to a girl.
